Indonesia and New Zealand Agree to Boost Trade Cooperation

1 day ago 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, is pushing for further economic cooperation between Indonesia and New Zealand, including in trade aspects.

Airlangga hopes that New Zealand grants more export opportunities for Indonesia, especially for its superior horticultural commodities. "We hope for New Zealand to open a broader market access for Indonesian tropical fruits," said Airlangga in his written statement on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.

Airlangga then discussed with New Zealand's Minister of Trade Todd McClay about workforce exchange, considering the possibility of a Work Holiday program between the two countries.

Airlangga also brought up the work visa scheme for Indonesian workers in New Zealand. "The utilization of work visas must be improved continuously," said Airlangga.

According to the minister, both countries have agreed to boost trade value to NZD 6 billion by 2029, following the positive trend of New Zealand's investments in 2024, amounting to US$26 million.

Airlangga also hopes that New Zealand can continue to support Indonesia's accession process to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

"We hope New Zealand will continue to support these strategic efforts," he said.

It is known that Airlangga is currently attending the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting 2025 held in Paris, France, on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. It was during this event that Airlangga met and discussed with Todd McClay.

At that moment, Airlangga then presented the initial memorandum document to the OECD, containing the comprehensive assessment of Indonesia's policies and standards towards OECD instruments.
