TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has no plan for online learning as part of its energy-saving policy, according to Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti.
The Indonesian government is known to have prepared a one-day work-from-home policy for civil servants in order to save fuel consumption due to the war in the Middle East.
According to Mu'ti, the work-from-home policy does not extend to the education sector. "Learning will continue as usual," said Mu'ti when contacted on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
He confirmed that the learning process for elementary to high school students will continue as normal, with face-to-face learning for five days a week.
Earlier, during a cabinet meeting at the State Palace in Jakarta on Friday, March 13, 2026, President Prabowo Subianto emphasized the need to save fuel consumption. Prabowo also considered the work-from-home policy a preventive measure against the impact of the global crisis.
In response to the President's directive, the Red-and-White Cabinet formulated an energy-saving strategy in the public sector, which includes education, health, and public services. Last week, the talks about online classes emerged in a Technical Coordination Meeting on Fuel Saving Policy.
During the meeting, the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, Pratikno, mentioned that the cross-sector energy-saving policy is expected to kick off in April 2026.
At the time, pratikno explained that whether classes would proceed offline or online would depend on the subject matter of the lessons. But Pratikno later affirmed that the education and health services will continue to run normally.
In a press statement on March 24, 2026, Pratikno said that the government prioritizes the implementation of face-to-face learning as the education sector must function optimally.
He also warned against "learning loss," which occurs where there is a regression of academic progress, which leads to loss of knowledge and skills.
Pratikno admitted that there had been discussions about the possibility of using a hybrid method for school, but it was later concluded that there is no urgency for online learning, considering the importance of maintaining the quality of education.
