Indonesian Hajj Village Council Formation on Hold Until President Returns

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Head of the Hajj Organizing Agency, Dahnil Azhar Simanjuntak, stated that the formation of the Indonesian hajj village high-level coordination board is still pending President Prabowo Subianto's decision. According to him, the decision will be announced by the Head of State after completing several overseas visits.

"Our high-level coordination board from our side will be appointed by the president eventually. But, the President hasn't returned yet," he said during a discussion forum in the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

The high-level coordination team is a joint team between the Saudi Arabian government and Indonesia. This team will be responsible for the Hajj village development. Although no specific names have emerged, Dahnil stated that several development strategies have begun to be discussed by the ministers in the relevant cabinet.

"So later (the Hajj village) will likely be discussed in detail in this council. Because there, it's not just about the Hajj issue, but also about food, economy, and so on," Dahnil said.

Furthermore, during the occasion, Dahnil also outlined three schemes for the Hajj village development that are being worked on by Prabowo and the cabinet. The first scheme, he said, the hajj village will be constructed from the ground up using investment funds from the Danantara Investment Management Agency.

The second option is that the government should purchase hotels that can accommodate at least 50,000 people. Meanwhile, the third scheme, Dahnil said, the government will lease hotels in Saudi Arabia for the long term.

"There's no decision yet on which one we will choose. Although certainly the President tends for the Hajj village to be built from the beginning and to be accelerated."

Building a Hajj village that only accommodates Indonesian pilgrims has been a long-standing idea of President Prabowo. The head of state wants easier access to and better services for pilgrims, especially the elderly, by having its facilities.

This plan was then blessed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman after a meeting in Jeddah on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.
