TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump claimed to have reached a trade deal with Indonesia after talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. He announced this through the social media platform Truth Social on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
"Great deal, for everybody, just made with Indonesia. I dealt directly with their highly respected President. DETAILS TO FOLLOW!!!" wrote Trump via the @realDonaldTrump account, but he stopped short of unveiling further details.
Last week, Trump announced a 32 percent import tariff on Indonesia, which the U.S. leader said was relatively small compared to the amount needed to balance the trade deficit with Indonesia. Trump also stated that Indonesia could be exempt from tariffs if it builds a factory in the U.S.
In response, Coordinating Minister for Economics Affairs Airlangga Hartarto departed for the U.S. to start negotiating with Trump's government. The minister claimed Indonesia remains optimistic about its odds with the U.S.-imposed levies.
Haryo Limanseto, the Spokesperson of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, said Indonesia has nearly a month to make tariff deals despite Trump announcing that Indonesia's 32 percent tariff will take effect on August 1, 2025.
"We don't consider it finalized, as the letter also said the tariff takes effect in August," he said at the ministry office on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
The government, Haryo said, has prepared two strategies to respond to Trump's tariffs: convincing the U.S. that Indonesia is a strategic trade partner and expanding trade cooperation with other partner countries.
Indonesia currently develops alternative markets to the U.S., one of which is through the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA).
Regarding Trump's latest claim, Tempo contacted Haryo for a response. "Let's wait together, hoping for the best results for both parties," said Haryo.
