TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has blamed the United States for the collapse of weekend peace talks in Pakistan, as both sides traded accusations over the breakdown of negotiations.
The talks in Islamabad ended after more than 20 hours on Saturday without an agreement, according to Iranian officials cited by Mehr News Agency and reported by Deutsche Welle. The Iranian delegation returned home on Sunday, with Tehran describing the US demands as “unreasonable” and “excessive.”
Ghalibaf, who was part of the Iranian delegation, said the US side failed to win Tehran’s trust.
“Before the negotiations, I emphasized that we have the necessary good faith and will but, due to the experiences of the two previous wars, we have no trust in the opposing side,” he wrote on social media.
“My colleagues on the Iranian delegation raised forward-looking initiatives, but the opposing side ultimately failed to gain the trust of the Iranian delegation in this round of negotiations.”
Iranian officials said the marathon talks—reportedly the longest in a year—produced partial understandings on some issues but stalled on “two or three important issues,” with Tehran refusing to compromise on what it called the “rights and interests of the Iranian people.”
“We reached an understanding on a number of issues, but on two or three important issues, views were far apart, and ultimately, the talks did not lead to an agreement,” a foreign ministry spokesperson told Mehr.
Officials also said the discussions took place “in an atmosphere of mistrust and suspicion,” with sensitive topics including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz further complicating the negotiations. A source cited by Mehr said Iran was not under pressure to rush a deal, adding that it was now up to Washington to “approach the issues realistically.” No new date or venue has been set for further talks.
On the US side, Vice President JD Vance, who led the delegation, said the talks collapsed over Iran’s refusal to make clear commitments on its nuclear program.
“We need to see an affirmative commitment that they will not seek a nuclear weapon, and they will not seek the tools that would enable them to quickly achieve a nuclear weapon,” Vance said.
He added that the US expected stronger guarantees from Tehran, while Iran maintained that it would continue defending its strategic interests and nuclear program.
Ghalibaf, meanwhile, said Iran would continue its policy direction despite the breakdown in talks. “The US has understood Iran’s logic and principles and it’s time for them to decide whether they can earn our trust or not,” he said, adding that Iran would not halt its efforts to consolidate its national defense achievements.
