'Toy Story 5' Leads Summer Box Office With $160M Opening

Toy Story 5 stormed into theaters with a massive $160 million debut across 4,425 locations in North America, surpassing the opening weekend performance of Universal’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie and proving that Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the gang still have plenty of box office magic left.

Based on Hollywood trade publications, Toy Story 5 had the biggest domestic debut of 2026 thus far. Over its weekend release, the fifth franchise also ranks as the largest start in the history of Toy Story installments, eclipsing the previous benchmark set by 2019’s Toy Story 4, which opened to $120 million.

Internationally, Toy Story 5 scored the second-largest animated opening weekend in history for $152 million behind 2018’s Incredibles 2 with $182.7 million, as per Variety.

Among them, Toy Story 5 has emerged as a standout family favorite, buoyed by strong critical acclaim, including a 94 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” CinemaScore from moviegoers.

Adding even more star power to the project, Taylor Swift contributed an original song, I Knew It, I Knew You, to the film’s soundtrack, further fueling excitement around the highly anticipated sequel.

With Toy Story 5 kicking off the season on a high note, Hollywood is gearing up for what could be one of the strongest summers at the box office in recent years. The momentum is set to continue with Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated epic The Odyssey, arriving in theaters next month amid extraordinary demand.

The summer movie slate will only get more crowded when Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters just two weeks after The Odyssey, setting the stage for a blockbuster showdown at the box office.
