Iran Declares No Sanctions Relief in US Nuclear Deal Proposal

4 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The spokesperson for the Iranian parliament stated on Sunday that the latest proposal from the United States (US) for a nuclear deal does not include lifting sanctions. This was revealed as Iranian state media reported that negotiations between the two countries seemed to hit a dead end.

In a video aired on Iranian state television as reported by CNA, parliament spokesperson Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated that "the US plan doesn't even mention lifting sanctions".

He called it a sign of dishonesty, accusing America of trying to impose a "unilateral" agreement that Tehran will not accept.

"The delusional US president should know better and change his approach if he really seeks a deal," Ghalibaf said.

The two arch enemies have held five rounds of talks mediated by Oman since April.

The negotiations aim to replace a crucial agreement between Tehran and the world's major powers that imposed restrictions on Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief, before US President Donald Trump scrapped the deal in 2018 during his first term in office.

On May 31, after the fifth round of talks, Iran said it had accepted "some elements" of the US proposal, with officials then questioning the "ambiguity" in the draft text.

The US and its Western allies have long accused the Islamic republic of seeking nuclear weapons, allegations consistently denied by Iran, insisting its atomic program is purely peaceful.

The key issues in the negotiations are the lifting of crippling economic sanctions and uranium enrichment.

Tehran says it has the right to enrich uranium under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, while the Trump administration referred to Iran's uranium enrichment as a "red line".

Trump, who has reinstated a "maximum pressure" campaign of sanctions against Iran since taking office in January, has repeatedly said Iran will not be allowed to enrich uranium under a potential deal.

On Tuesday, Iran's top negotiator, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, said the country "will not ask permission from anyone to continue uranium enrichment".

IAEA MEETING

According to the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran is the only non-nuclear-armed state in the world enriching uranium up to 60 percent, approaching the 90 percent threshold needed for nuclear weapons.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday rejected the latest US proposal and said uranium enrichment is the "key" to Iran's nuclear program.

The IAEA Board of Governors is scheduled to meet in Vienna starting Monday, June 9, 2025, and discuss Iran's nuclear activities.

On Sunday, the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran warned that they could reduce their level of cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog if it adopts a resolution against them.

"Certainly, the IAEA should not expect the Islamic Republic of Iran to continue extensive and friendly cooperation," Iranian organization spokesperson Behrouz Kamalvandi told state television.

Araghchi on Friday accused European powers of "taking a malicious step against Iran at the IAEA Board of Governors", warning that "Iran will react strongly to any violation of its rights".

A quarterly report from the IAEA issued last week cited "lack of overall cooperation" from Iran and raised concerns about undeclared nuclear material.

Tehran has rejected the report as politically motivated and based on "fake documents" purportedly provided by its arch-foe, Israel.
