"You probably know more than I do, but I just saw the latest results of the Indonesian national team. It surprised me," he said at the ASIOP Stadium in Jakarta on Sunday, June 8, 2025.

Indonesia secured a place in the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers despite still having one match left in the third round. Their qualification was confirmed following a victory over China on Thursday, June 5, 2025.

In addition, Saudi Arabia's win over Bahrain helped solidify Indonesia’s position. The Garuda Squad now sits in fourth place in the temporary Group C standings for the third round, a position that cannot be surpassed by either Bahrain or China.

Honda noted that the Indonesian squad features many talented players. He also observed that the younger players have shown significant improvement, giving the team a real opportunity to progress further. "So, the Indonesian national team still has a chance to play in the World Cup."

"It's extraordinary. Remarkable progress in the Southeast Asian countries. It's not easy, right? So, I hope the Indonesian national team qualifies for the World Cup next year," Honda added.

Indonesia will complete its third-round campaign by facing Japan on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. Honda also shared his thoughts on the upcoming match, which is scheduled to take place at Suita City Stadium in Osaka. "I think the match is not too important, just a trial match. But the Japanese national team lost to Australia, so I think they should win," he said.

"I believe the best players will likely play as starters against the Indonesian national team. I hope both teams will play well. I am neutral," Honda continued.

Japan has already secured the top spot in Group C and earned direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The second-place team will also qualify directly, while the third and fourth-place teams will advance to the fourth round.
