TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A senior official from Iran accused Israel of deploying "the occult and supernatural spirits" during its 12-day war with Iran last month, Iran International reported on Friday, as cited by Jerusalem Post and The Times of India on Sunday, July 13.
Abdollah Ganji, a former editor of the IRGC-affiliated newspaper Javan, told his 150,000 followers on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday that a "strange phenomenon" had occurred during the war.
"After the recent war, a few sheets of paper were found on the streets of Tehran containing talismans with Jewish symbols," he wrote.
"In the first year of the Gaza war, news had also leaked about Netanyahu meeting with occult specialists."
Ganji added that a few years ago Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated that enemy countries, Western and Hebrew intelligence agencies used occult sciences and jinn (supernatural beings) entities for espionage.
The post immediately sparked strong reactions and ridicule on social media.
The official Mossad X account, in Farsi, responded to Ganji's post. "Using drugs and talking to the jinn are not desirable traits for someone leading a country," they wrote.
Waleed Gadban, Israel's Political Advisor to the Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations, reposted Mossad X's post with the caption in Farsi, "Jinn, jinn are everywhere," accompanied by a ghost emoji at the end.
Jinns are also said to have the ability to take various forms and possess extraordinary powers.
They were first mentioned in the Quran and conceptualized in Islam "as creatures parallel to human beings who are capable of choosing between good and evil and must thus face eventual salvation or damnation," writes Britannica.
The armed conflict between Iran and Israel began when Israel launched a sudden attack on civilian apartments, military facilities, and major nuclear facilities in Iran on June 13, 2025, amid the Gaza war and its broader regional impact.
In the early hours of the war, Israeli air and ground forces killed several senior Iranian military leaders, nuclear scientists, and politicians, including a failed assassination attempt on Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian; and damaged or destroyed Iran's air defense and some of its nuclear and military facilities.
The United States, backing Israel, took offensive action on the ninth day of the war by bombing three Iranian nuclear sites.
The Iranian government announced the latest death toll from the 12-day war against Israel last week. Tehran mentioned that at least 1,060 people had been confirmed dead, and warned that the number could still rise.
