TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola expressed dissatisfaction with his team's performance following a 2-3 loss to AS Monaco in a pre-season match at Anfield on Saturday.
Liverpool took an early lead through goals from Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, but Aleksandr Golovin, Mika Biereth, and Paris Brunner turned the match around to secure a win for Monaco.
"I think we played really good [in the] first half, especially the first 30 minutes, but right now probably we don't have much more in terms of the level required to play like this," said Iraola on Liverpool's website on Monday, as quoted by ANTARA.
He argued that Liverpool lost because several players were not yet at 100 percent physical fitness, including Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo, who had recently played for the Netherlands in the 2026 World Cup.
"The problem is right now probably they don't have the energy for 90 minutes and they start to get tired. It will take time with them, we need more training with them," said the former AFC Bournemouth manager.
He then explained the status of two senior players who did not take part: Jeremy Jacquet, who he said was not yet fit enough to play, and Curtis Jones, who is dealing with a hip issue.
However, the Spanish coach admitted he was happy to manage his first match at Anfield as the Reds' manager. "Everything went very well. We enjoyed it," he said.
Liverpool will play their final pre-season match against Como at Anfield on Monday, August 17, at 00:00 Indonesian time, before opening the season with an away game against Newcastle United at St. James' Park a week later.
