TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Janice Tjen has made history for Indonesian tennis after soaring to 47th in the world in the latest Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings update on Monday, February 2, 2026. Her rise in the rankings is due to her performance at the Australian Open 2026.
Janice has shot up 12 spots from her previous position at 59th. This sharp increase is attributed to her impressive performance at the Australian Open 2026. She stole the spotlight in the first round by defeating Leylah Fernandez, who was ranked 23rd in the world at the time.
This victory has paved the way for Janice in a Grand Slam tournament and has led her to make national tennis history. She has become the first Indonesian female singles tennis player to win a match at the Australian Open since Yayuk Basuki in 1998.
Janice's journey was halted in the second round after facing former world tennis queen Karolna Pliskova. However, the additional points from Melbourne have made her the first Indonesian female singles tennis player of the 21st century to break into the top 50 in the world rankings. Previously, the best record in the modern era was held by Angelique Widjaja at 55th in the world in March 2003.
Now, Janice follows in the footsteps of Yayuk Basuki, who once broke into the top 19 in the world and advanced to the Wimbledon Championships quarterfinals in 1997. Janice's positive momentum continues at the Abu Dhabi Open. In the opening match, she eliminated Australian tennis player Maya Joint in a stamina-draining three-set duel on Monday, February 2, 2026.
