Jokowi to Attend Independence Day Commemorations in Jakarta

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former President Joko Widodo, known as Jokowi, confirmed his attendance at Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day commemoration. Jokowi stated that he had accepted an invitation to attend the state event. "I will. Insha Allah, I will attend, because we have already received the invitation," Jokowi said on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.

Jokowi also confirmed that he would attend the Annual Session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) scheduled for Friday, August 14, 2026. "I will attend, because we have received the invitation now," Jokowi said.

As for what to wear for the August 17 commemoration, Jokowi left the matter to his wife, Iriana. "Oh, Ibu (Mrs) Jokowi is preparing it," he said with a smile. Last year, Jokowi also attended the 80th Indonesian Independence Day ceremony at the Merdeka Palace on August 17, 2025. At that time, Jokowi wore traditional Javanese clothing, complete with a black cap (peci).

Meanwhile, a delegation from MPR visited Jokowi's residence in the Sumber area of Banjarsari District, Surakarta, today. They arrived to deliver an invitation letter to Jokowi to attend and participate in the MPR Annual Session, scheduled for Friday, August 14, 2026.

MPR RI Secretary General Siti Fauziah stated that Jokowi will definitely attend the MPR RI Annual Session, which will be held jointly with the House of Representatives (DPR) and the House of Regions (DPD). She said that the invitations to the event also include the presidents and vice presidents. "Insha Allah, he (Jokowi) will attend. Insha Allah, he will attend. So, this is indeed his sole duty to extend the invitation," Siti Fauziah said.

He said all previous presidents and vice presidents would be invited to the MPR RI Annual Session. "Everyone is invited. Not former presidents, but previous presidents. Previous presidents and vice presidents are all invited to the annual session," she said.
