TEMPO.CO, Jakarta North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was reappointed as chair of the State Affairs Commission at the first session of the country's new parliament, held on Sunday, according to state media.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Monday quoted Ri Il Hwan, a deputy of the Supreme People's Assembly of North Korea, as proposing Kim's reelection, stating that the country's strength stems not only from its weapons but also from the leader's "political conviction and courage."

Previously, at a crucial congress of the Workers' Party of Korea in February, its first in a five-year hiatus, Kim was also re-elected as the party's general secretary.

The parliamentary session that followed the election of new members earlier this month primarily focused on official appointments, with Jo Yong Won, one of Kim's close aides, elected as chair.

He replaces Choe Ryong Hae, who was removed from the party's Central Committee list, likely due to age. Meanwhile, Ri Son Gwon was elected as vice chair.

Parliament also confirmed several cabinet members, including Prime Minister Pak Thae Song and Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui, who will remain in their positions. Former Prime Minister Kim Tok Hun was appointed as first vice prime minister in a new role.

Meanwhile, Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Un's younger sister, was removed from her position as a member of the State Affairs Commission.

In addition to confirming the country's leadership, the parliamentary session is also scheduled to discuss constitutional revisions, the 2026 state budget, and the five-year economic development plan.
