TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Lebanon has withdrawn the accreditation of the ambassador of Iran and declared him persona non grata. Beirut demands the departure of Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Reza Shibani from Lebanon no later than Sunday, March 29, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, as reported by Al Jazeera.
The Ministry also summoned Lebanon's Ambassador to Iran, Ahmad Sweidan, for consultations, citing what was described as a violation of diplomatic norms and practices established between the two countries by Tehran.
This decision was made as the Israeli military continues to attack Lebanon with airstrikes and ongoing ground assaults in southern Lebanon since the cross-border attack by Hezbollah on March 2. This was in response to the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Hezbollah, backed by Iran, has observed the ceasefire agreement signed with Israel in November 2024 despite Israel's repeated violations.
Lebanese authorities stated that at least 1,039 people have been killed and 2,876 injured in Israel's attacks since early March.
The current escalation occurs amid the joint US-Israeli attacks on Iran, which have claimed the lives of over 1,340 Iranians since February 28.
Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, along with Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states, stating that the attacks were aimed at "US military assets."
