TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Lebanon is pursuing a permanent ceasefire agreement with Israel through negotiations that would restore stability, secure Israeli withdrawal, and establish full state authority over its territory, Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi said on Friday.
Speaking after a meeting in Beirut with Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel, Raggi said the talks covered developments in Lebanon and the broader region, as well as diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions, according to a statement from the Lebanese Foreign Ministry.
He thanked Portugal for its support for Lebanon in international forums and for backing government decisions and reform efforts.
Raggi said Lebanon "aims to reach a lasting ceasefire through negotiations that would ensure stability, Israel’s withdrawal, full Lebanese sovereignty over its territory and exclusive control of weapons by the state."
He also stressed the need for continued international support, particularly from European countries, to strengthen the Lebanese army’s capabilities in maintaining security and stability.
Rangel reaffirmed Portugal’s support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and welcomed the ceasefire effort and negotiations initiated by Beirut, the statement said.
He described the process as an opportunity to reach a comprehensive and lasting settlement that would strengthen regional stability and bring an end to the conflict. Rangel also thanked Lebanon for supporting Portugal’s bid for a seat on the UN Security Council and said Lisbon remains committed to deepening bilateral relations.
On Thursday, US President Donald Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel.
More than 2,196 casualties and 7,185 injuries occurred during Israel's 45-day attack in Lebanon, with over a million people displaced, according to official government figures.
Israel launched a war against Lebanon in October 2023, and the ceasefire was announced in November 2024. However, Israel continued to violate it every day before expanding its attack on March 2nd.
Not only has Israel attacked, but they have also occupied parts of southern Lebanon.
