TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Meriyati Hoegeng, the wife of former Chief of the Indonesian National Police General Hoegeng Imam Santoso, has died at the age of 100. Affectionately known as Eyang Meri, she passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, after receiving intensive medical treatment at Bhayangkara Polri Hospital in East Jakarta.

“The information is correct,” National Police Headquarters official Commissioner General Chryshnanda Dwilaksana said when confirmed on Tuesday.

Meriyati, whose full name was Meriyati Roeslani Hoegeng, will be buried in Bogor, West Java, on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, in the afternoon. Her body is currently lying in state at the family’s residence in Depok.

Born on June 23, 1925, Meriyati was the daughter of Soemakno Martokoesoemo and Jeanne Reyneke van Stuwe. She married Hoegeng Imam Santoso in Yogyakarta on October 31, 1946.

General Hoegeng, who served as Indonesia’s fifth national police chief, is widely regarded as one of the country’s most principled law enforcement leaders and is frequently cited as a model of integrity.

Among his most notable actions was the 1969 crackdown on a luxury car embezzlement case involving Robby Cahyadi.

In 1970, Hoegeng also exposed a rape case in Yogyakarta in which the perpetrator was the child of a government official. His firm stance in handling high-profile cases ultimately led to his early retirement on October 2, 1971, with the government at the time citing the need for organizational renewal.
