Microsoft Extends Office Support on Windows 10 to 2028

MICROSOFT has canceled its plan to end support for Office applications on Windows 10 by the end of 2025. The company has now announced that they will continue to provide security updates for the applications until 2028. This announcement comes after Microsoft stated in January that they would end support for Microsoft 365 Apps such as Word.

At that time, users were advised to switch to Windows 11 in order to continue using the applications after October 14, 2025. "To keep you secure during the upgrade process to Windows 11, we will continue to provide security updates for Microsoft 365 on Windows 10 for three years after the end of Windows 10 support, which will end on October 10, 2028," Microsoft's statement in the updated support document quoted from Tech Republic. Thursday, May 15, 2025.

Office Support for Windows

Microsoft first supported Office 365 on Windows 10 in 2015. Since the launch of Windows 10, this operating system has become the primary platform for millions of Microsoft Office users worldwide, as quoted from the Microsoft website.

Previously known as Office 365, Microsoft 365 has been designed to run optimally on Windows 10 with consistent feature updates and security support for nearly a decade. The combination of Windows 10 and Microsoft 365 has become the foundation for digital productivity in both office environments and for individual users.

Office 365 runs seamlessly on Windows 10 with features such as OneDrive integrated directly into File Explorer, Microsoft account synchronization, and system notifications. This allows users to receive real-time updates and reminders. Windows 10 also supports automatic Office updates via Windows Update for application security and performance.

Windows 10 security features such as Windows Hello, BitLocker, and Windows Defender help strengthen data protection and user identity for Office 365. This collaboration in the context of remote work and team collaboration, especially through applications like Microsoft Teams and Outlook, can run optimally thanks to the stability of the Windows 10 operating system.

In the business and education sectors, this integration also accelerates digital transformation. Many organizations rely on the combination of Windows 10 and Office 365 for a fully digital workspace, where documents, communication, and collaboration can be easily conducted across devices and locations.

However, with the maturity of Windows 10 and the launch of Windows 11, Microsoft began to plan a shift in its support focus. In January 2024, Microsoft surprised many by announcing that they would end support for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10.
