Mount Dukono Erupts Again, Spewing Ash 1.5 Km High

1 day ago 28

TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The eruption of Mount Dukono in North Maluku at 08:42 AM local time earlier today, Tuesday, June 3, 2025, produced a column of ash 1.5 kilometers high. Head of the Geological Agency, Muhammad Wafid, stated that the volcanic ash, ranging in color from white to gray, was thick in intensity.

"Tilted towards the east," he said in an official statement after the eruption.

This eruption was recorded on the seismogram of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) of the Geological Agency with a maximum amplitude of 34 millimeters and a duration of 41 seconds. "The eruption is still ongoing as the report is being made," said Wafid.

The 1,335 meters above sea level mountain located north of Halmahera Island is currently on alert status or level II. Wafid urged residents or visitors not to approach, or even climb, the area within a 4-kilometer radius of the Malupang Warirang Crater.

"Considering that periodic volcanic ash eruptions occur and the distribution of ash follows the direction and speed of the wind, the area affected by its fallout is not fixed," he added.

Since January 2025, Mount Dukono has erupted 233 times. The height of the ash column in the last eruption before this one reached 1.2 kilometers from its peak.

Mount Dukono's eruptions are often followed by lahars flowing through the surrounding rivers. These lahars are formed by a mixture of volcanic material with rainwater or groundwater.

When it erupted in 1933, Mount Dukono's lahar flowing northward caused damage to local farmlands and infrastructure. The lahar flow could destroy bridges, roads, and buildings along its path.

Based on the analysis of the potential hazards of Mount Dukono's eruptions, the local government had previously designated three Disaster-Prone Areas (KRB) III, II, and I there. Some river flows included in KRB I have the potential to become lava paths. When mapped, there are Mamuya and Auluto Rivers in the northwest, Mede and Ruko Rivers in the northeast, and Mancile River in the west.
