Mount Semeru Erupts Four Times Tuesday Morning, Ash Plume Extends 1,000 Meters Above Peak

TEMPO.CO, Lumajang - Indonesia's Mount Semeru erupted again on Tuesday morning, May 13, 2025, with an eruption column reaching up to 1,000 meters above the peak.

The Semeru Volcano Observation Post (PGA) located on Mount Sawur, Sumber Wuluh Village, Candipuro District, Lumajang Regency, East Java, recorded four eruptions since early Tuesday.

"The observed ash column is gray with moderate to thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 165 seconds," said PGA Semeru officer, Yadi Yuliandi, in his written report on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, based on seismic observations in the last 24 hours until early Tuesday, there were several seismic activities with different intensities, strengths, and durations. These include 46 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 12-22 mm and durations of 56-143 seconds.

One rockfall earthquake with an amplitude of 10 mm and a duration of 80 seconds was also recorded. Additionally, there were 13 blast earthquakes with amplitudes of 3-8 mm and durations of 37-88 seconds.

One harmonic earthquake with an amplitude of 10 mm and a duration of 121 seconds was recorded. There was also one local tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 11 mm, an S-P interval of 9 seconds, and a duration of 30 seconds.

In addition, two distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 7-9 mm, S-P intervals of 13-31 seconds, and durations of 34-80 seconds were also detected. The Semeru PGA also recorded two flood vibration earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-38 mm and durations of 6,995-7,087 seconds.

Despite these activities, the alert level for Mount Semeru remains at Level II, or "Alert." At this level, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) issued several recommendations.

The public is advised not to conduct any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, within 8 kilometers of the summit. Beyond that range, people should avoid areas within 500 meters from the riverbanks of Besuk Kobokan due to the potential expansion of hot clouds and lahar flows, which could reach up to 13 kilometers from the peak.

Furthermore, residents are urged to stay at least 3 kilometers away from the crater due to the risk of volcanic projectiles.

The community should also remain cautious of the potential for hot clouds, lava flows, and lahar in rivers and valleys that originate at the summit of Mount Semeru, especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat, as well as smaller tributaries of Besuk Kobokan.
