TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Food, Drugs, and Cosmetics Assessment Institute of the Indonesian Council of Ulema (LPPOM MUI) has explained the reasons behind products that were previously certified halal being potentially found to contain pig ingredients.
Director of LPPOM MUI, Muti Arintawati, ensured that seven products declared by the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) to contain pig ingredients had previously passed halal certification. "After the halal audit process, there are various possibilities that led to the products being suspected of containing pig ingredients," said Muti in Central Jakarta, Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
According to Muti, one of the causes is negligence on the part of the producers. After obtaining halal certification, producers should implement a strict and sustainable halal assurance system. However, not all companies consistently maintain halal standards. "But there are also those who only aim to obtain certification for the sake of legality," she said.
Muti also revealed another potential factor, which is cross-contamination during the distribution process. She also did not dismiss the possibility of business competition behind this issue. "That's very possible. There are many opportunities," she said.
As a Halal Inspection Institute (LPH), LPPOM MUI is responsible for the laboratory testing process. Muti stated that they had submitted all the test results for the nine products suspected of containing pig ingredients to BPJPH. When first tested, she said, all of these products met halal requirements.
The products suspected of containing pig ingredients are:
- Three variants of ChompChomp branded marshmallows imported from China by PT Catur Global Sukses.
- Two Corniche branded marshmallow products imported from China by PT Dinamik Multi Sukses.
- Gelatin-shaped snacks with the Hakiki brand produced by PT Hakiki Donarta
- Larbee branded marshmallows imported by PT Budi Indo Perkasa.
Prior to this, on April 21, 2025, BPJPH together with the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) announced the discovery of nine marshmallow products containing pig DNA. Out of this total, seven products were labeled halal. Head of BPJPH Ahmad Haikal Hasan stated that they had imposed sanctions in the form of product withdrawal from circulation.
