Pertamina Urges Public Not to Panic Buy as Fuel Queues Form

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia's state-owned energy company PT Pertamina (Persero) said long queues of vehicles at gas stations in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, were caused by a surge in fuel demand and distribution adjustments at several supply points.

Pertamina Vice President of Corporate Communications Muhammad Baron made the statement in a text message on Friday, March 20, 2026.

Baron said Pertamina is continuing efforts to normalize fuel distribution by optimizing deliveries to gas stations experiencing higher-than-usual demand.

He added that the company is gradually adjusting supply and coordinating intensively with relevant parties to ensure fuel is distributed more evenly.

On behalf of the company, Baron urged the public to remain calm and avoid excessive purchases or panic buying, stressing that fuel stocks remain safe and sufficient.

In recent days, a video showing long lines of vehicles on a roadway has circulated widely on social media. The footage, uploaded by the Instagram account @agung_elshaarawy on Friday, March 20, shows dozens of cars and motorcycles lined up along the road.

The video, which runs for more than a minute, shows that the queue was made up of vehicles waiting to refuel at a public gas station.
