TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto announced that Indonesia is open to establishing diplomatic ties with Israel—on the condition that Israel formally recognizes Palestinian independence. He made the statement during a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
"Once the state of Palestine is recognized by Israel, Indonesia is ready to recognize Israel and we are ready to establish diplomatic relations with Israel," said Prabowo, as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel.
Prabowo reiterated Indonesia’s firm stance on a two-state solution as the path to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
"The independence of the Palestinian nation is the only way to achieve true peace," he said.
He added that Indonesia acknowledges Israel’s right to exist as a sovereign nation, despite its unwavering support for Palestinian statehood.
"I emphasize that we also need to recognize and ensure the rights of Israel to exist as a sovereign state and a state that needs to be observed and guaranteed security," said Prabowo.
Indonesia, he added, is also ready to send peacekeeping forces to conflict-affected areas in the region.
During the press conference, Prabowo also praised France’s support for Palestinian independence. "France will continue to urge the immediate cessation of armed activities in Gaza," he said.
Earlier that day, President Prabowo hosted President Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron at the Merdeka Palace. The French delegation passed through the Monas intersection, greeted by children waving French and Indonesian flags.
The Macron convoy entered the Merdeka Palace gates at around 9:45 a.m. WIB, escorted by 17 motorcyclists and 50 cavalry guards from the Presidential Security Forces. Outside the palace, Prabowo personally welcomed and embraced Macron, and greeted First Lady Brigitte Macron.
The visit began with the playing of the French national anthem, La Marseillaise, accompanied by a 21-gun salute, followed by Indonesia’s national anthem, Indonesia Raya, performed by the Presidential Guard's musical corps.
President Prabowo then introduced Macron to members of his cabinet, including Economy Minister Airlangga Hartarto, Foreign Minister Sugiono, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and Investment Minister Rosan Roeslani.
Also present were Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Communication and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid, Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman, Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri, Cultural Minister Fadli Zon, Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Djiwandono, and Indonesian Ambassador to France, Mohamad Oemar.
