Russia Cancels Annual Military Parade Over Security Concerns

5 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Russian government has canceled the annual military parade, which serves as the highlight of the Navy Day commemoration on Sunday, July 27, 2025. The event, which was scheduled to take place in the waters off the coast of St. Petersburg, has been canceled for security reasons.

"It has to do with the general situation. Security reasons are of utmost importance," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, as quoted by a report from a Russian news agency in The Moscow Times. However, he did not further explain the form of threats or risks being referred to.

The parade was previously planned as the main event of the Russian Navy Day celebration, which falls on the last Sunday of July. According to a report from Al Arabiya, the parade is part of a tradition revived by President Vladimir Putin in 2017, after it was abolished during the Soviet era.

The authorities of St. Petersburg had announced the cancellation of the parade last Friday, including the fireworks and the procession of sailing ships, rowing boats, motorboats, and jet skis. However, the announcement was later removed from the official statement. The city government stated that it did not have the authority to provide information about the event, which is the responsibility of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Additionally, this is the first time the parade has been revived. President Putin did not attend the Navy Day commemoration in person this year. He only delivered a speech via a video recording and praised the "bravery" and "heroism" of the Russian sailors involved in the military operations in Ukraine.

Russia, which launched an invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, is now facing backlash in the form of drone attacks on its territory. On the same day as the parade cancellation, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that they had shot down 100 Ukrainian drones overnight.

At least 10 drones were intercepted near St. Petersburg. The governor of Leningrad region, Aleksandr Drozdenko, stated that a woman was injured in the attack. The attack also disrupted activities at Pulkovo Airport, delaying dozens of flights according to the local airport authorities.
