Saudi Arabia Declares 2026 Eid al-Fitr on Friday, March 20

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has declared that Eid al-Fitr, or 1 Shawwal 1447 Hijri, will fall on Friday, March 20, 2026.

According to an announcement from the Royal Palace on Wednesday, March 1, the Supreme Court ruled that Thursday is the final day of Ramadan, confirming Friday as the first day of this year’s Eid celebrations.

The Supreme Court also extended its Eid greetings to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman, as well as all citizens, residents, and the wider Muslim community.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court offered prayers that Allah Almighty accepts the worship of all Muslims performed during Ramadan and maintains the security, stability, and prosperity of the Saudi Kingdom.

How About Indonesia?

As reported earlier, the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs will hold the session of isbat to determine the beginning of Syawal 1447 Hijri today, March 19, 2026. The Isbat session will be held at the Auditorium H.M. Rasjidi, Ministry of Religious Affairs Office, Central Jakarta.

Thobib Al Asyhar, Head of the Ministry’s Public Relations Bureau, said there are two possible dates for Eid this year.

“It could fall on March 20, aligning with Muhammadiyah, or on March 21 if determined through istikmal,” he said on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.

Thobib reminded the public that, even if there are differences in the observed date, tolerance and harmony should be maintained. “If the results differ, it is hoped that the community will continue to uphold respect and unity,” he said.

He also noted the timing of religious celebrations this year, which coincide with Nyepi, the Hindu Day of Silence. “Major religious holidays should continue to uphold the values of religious nobility, including mutual respect,” Thobib added.

The Ministry hopes that the 2026 Eid al-Fitr determination will be received wisely and peacefully by the community, regardless of potential differences in observance.
