Swiss National Named Suspect in Bali Nyepi Insult Case

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Cyber Crime Directorate of the Bali Regional Police has declared a Swiss national, Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, a suspect in a case of alleged insult towards Nyepi Day. The case originated on Friday, March 20, 2026, around 08:00 WITA (Central Indonesian Time). "When officers were conducting cyber patrols and found a post on the Instagram account @luzzysun," said the Head of Public Relations at the Bali Regional Police, Grand Commissioner Polisi Ariasandy, as quoted from Antara, Tuesday, March 24, 2026.

In the post, the account owner wrote a sentence that is suspected of insulting Nyepi Day. One of the Instagram stories read, "A day of silence where you're not allowed to go outside in Bali is pretty peaceful outside :), fck Nyepi day and fck your rules too".

Ariasandy explained that personnel from the Sub-Directorate III of Cyber Crime of the Bali Regional Police uncovered this case on March 20-21, 2026. The police had previously conducted profiling and successfully identified the account owner as Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, a Swiss national.

The police then arrested Luzian and took him to the Cyber Crime Directorate of the Bali Regional Police for further questioning. After conducting a case examination at 16:00 WITA, the investigators escalated the status of the case to an investigation and declared Luzian Andrin Zgraggen as a suspect. Currently, Luzian is detained at the Bali Regional Police Detention Center.

Luzian is charged under Article 301 paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code concerning the dissemination of content containing elements of religious hatred through information technology facilities. The Bali Regional Police stated that the elements of the article being charged have been fulfilled, ranging from the legal subject, the dissemination action through social media, to the content deemed to contain hatred towards a group based on religion.
