TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - For those who plan to travel to the United States, it is important to be aware of the latest policies on carry-on items. The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have identified seven types of items that are not allowed in the registered baggage on all flights.
Seven Risky Items
The seven types of items include lithium batteries, as reported by Times of India. These items consist of:
1. Chargers,
2. Phone charger cases,
3. Spare lithium-ion batteries,
4. Spare lithium-metal batteries,
5. Phone batteries,
6. Laptop batteries, and
7. External battery packs and portable rechargers.
Items containing lithium batteries have the potential to cause fires, especially if they become too hot or experience thermal runaway. These chargers can lead to fires in the aircraft cargo hold. Some reasons for batteries becoming too hot include physical damage, overcharging, exposure to heat or water, as well as poor or defective packaging.
Aircraft Fire Incidents
This policy is a precautionary measure to prevent fires on aircraft. Several aircraft fire incidents have occurred in the past due to lithium batteries. Earlier this year, seven passengers were injured after a power bank caught fire on Air Busan 391 in South Korea. Previously, a Southwest Airlines flight was evacuated after a cell phone caught fire during a flight in November 2024.
As a result, all these devices must now be packed in carry-on baggage. "When carry-on bags are inspected at the gate or at the aircraft side, all lithium batteries and spare power banks must be removed from the bag and kept with the passenger in the aircraft cabin. The battery terminals must be protected from short circuiting," said the FAA in a statement quoted from NDTV.
By keeping these devices in the cabin, the flight crew can respond quickly in case of an emergency. There are several ways to pack lithium batteries in carry-on baggage, such as covering them with tape, avoiding travel with damaged or leaking batteries, and limiting to two spare batteries with a capacity between 101-160 Wh (common for high-capacity laptops). Any larger batteries require approval from the airline.
