1,077 Inmates Granted Special Vesak Day Remission Across Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Directorate General of Corrections at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights has granted special remission for Vesak Day to 1,077 inmates and sentence reductions to two Buddhist juvenile delinquents across Indonesia.

Minister of Law and Human Rights, Agus Andriabto, stated that the granting of religious remission is a form of the state's presence in ensuring the rights of inmates who have undergone the rehabilitation process.

This special religious remission is also a form of appreciation for the changes in the behavior of inmates during their incarceration.

"It is hoped that this will be an encouragement to continue self-improvement and be ready to return to society," said Agus in an official statement on Monday, May 12, 2025.

According to data from the Directorate General of Corrections, there are 1,524 Buddhist inmates and juvenile delinquents. However, only 1,079 people met the criteria to receive Vesak Day and sentence reductions.

Out of the 1,079 individuals who received Vesak Day special remission and sentence reductions, a total of 1,072 inmates received special remission I or partial reduction, 5 inmates received special remission II or direct release after receiving remission, and two juvenile delinquents received sentence reductions.

The amount of remission given also varies, ranging from 15 days, 1 month, 1 month 15 days, to 2 months. This depends on the length of the sentence served and the results of the rehabilitation evaluation.

The three regions with the highest number of inmates receiving remission are North Sumatra with 186 individuals, West Kalimantan with 184 individuals, and Jakarta with 150 individuals.

Meanwhile, the two juvenile delinquents who received sentence reductions came from the Riau Islands and North Sumatra regions.

The Directorate General of Corrections noted that the granting of this remission is not only a form of fulfilling the rights of inmates but also has a positive impact on state budget efficiency.

It is recorded that the total cost saving for inmate meals from the 2024 Waisak remission reached Rp620,160,000.
