TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian police recorded 141 traffic accidents during the early phase of the Eid al-Fitr exodus, from Wednesday, March 18, to Thursday morning, March 19, 2026, according to the Public Relations Task Force of Operation Ketupat 2026.
Operation Ketupat spokesperson Commissioner General Jansen Avitus Panjaitan said the accidents left 21 people dead, 42 seriously injured, and 88 others with minor injuries.
“The accidents also caused material losses of around Rp595 million,” Jansen said in a written statement on Thursday, March 19, 2026.
He said public mobility had increased significantly, particularly among travelers leaving Jakarta ahead of Eid al-Fitr.
Based on data from state toll road operator Jasa Marga, a total of 181,617 vehicles left Jakarta through four main toll gates on D-3, or three days before Eid. The figure marked an increase of around 78.84 percent compared with normal traffic conditions.
The highest outbound traffic volume was recorded at the Cikampek Utama toll gate heading toward the Trans-Java toll road, followed by the Cikupa toll gate toward Merak, the Ciawi toll gate toward Puncak, and the Kalihurip Utama toll gate toward Bandung.
Meanwhile, inbound traffic to Jakarta through the same four toll gates reached 78,450 vehicles, down about 20.55 percent from normal conditions.
Police also reported that traffic conditions at Gilimanuk Port in Bali had improved after severe congestion earlier in the day. The port is a key crossing point for travelers moving between Java and Bali during the holiday season.
Congestion was also reported on the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road as outbound traffic surged during the annual homecoming period. However, police said traffic remained under control and was being managed by officers on the ground.
High passenger volumes were also seen across public transportation services.
At 36 ferry ports, authorities recorded 1,132 ferry crossings carrying a total of 378,689 passengers. Of those, 163,603 passengers traveled on the Java-Sumatra route, while 72,497 passengers used the Java-Bali crossing.
In rail transport, there were 2,685 train trips serving 1,279,902 passengers. In the aviation sector, authorities recorded 2,603 flights carrying 303,418 departing passengers.
Jansen urged the public to prioritize safety during travel and avoid using firecrackers ahead of Eid al-Fitr.
“Because it can endanger safety and disrupt public order,” he said.
Police also called on the public to maintain religious tolerance, as this year’s Eid al-Fitr period coincides with Nyepi, the Balinese Hindu Day of Silence.
Authorities said people needing assistance or wishing to report emergencies can contact the police’s 24-hour hotline at 110.
