5 Types of Hotels to Avoid for Smooth-Sailing Vacation

6 days ago 12

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The holiday season is the time to plan your trip, starting first with your preferred destinations, how to get there, and where you would stay during the vacation. It gets a bit tricky choosing hotels or resorts, as the abundance of options promises a varying degree of comfort and accessibility.

Travel expert Javier Sobrino, the founder of Descubriendo Viajes, a Spanish travel platform, revealed five types of accommodation that tourists should avoid. Knowing these types of hotels not only makes the trip easier but also avoids scams.

Here are five hotels that should be avoided:

1. Airport hotels

Airport hotels are usually overpriced and underwhelming. Although many book for practical reasons without realizing the cost, both in terms of money and experience.

"Unless you've got a flight departing before 8 am, you're wasting your final night in a sterile room when you could enjoy a meal with local flavor and charm," he said, as quoted from Express UK.

2. Too-good-to-be-true cheap resorts

Sobrino said that tourists should be wary of affordable resorts that seem too good to be true. Especially resorts with a series of unimpressive reviews. Although they all can offer good value, the bad value is usually in diluted drinks, questionable buffet cleanliness, and a disappointing atmosphere.

"Budget all-inclusives often serve mediocre food in buffets where items sit out for hours," Sobrino warned, adding that fake weather reasons are often used to cancel promised activities.

3. Mediocre reviews

Sobrino advised paying attention to reviews related to food and avoiding resorts with mostly mediocre reviews. If less than 25 percent of the reviews are marked as "excellent," it is likely a sign that the experience is unsatisfactory.

4. Remote roadside hotels

Sobrino added that remote roadside hotels, although seemingly affordable, often have hidden shortcomings that ruin the trip, especially for those who are not used to it. This type of accommodation, usually located along busy roads, often has poor sound insulation, a lack of dining options, and creates a feeling of isolation overall.

Although the price may be tempting, the lack of comfort and atmosphere makes these hotels a poor choice for most tourists. Being too far from the city center or tourist attractions can easily change the dream trip.

5. Hotels undergoing frequent renovations

Hotels undergoing renovations often overlook guest comfort by underestimating the disturbance. Hotels that offer small discounts while claiming minor renovations. However, after check-in, half of the facilities are closed, and the noise from construction starts at 7 am.
