19 Inmates Escape from Papua Prison After Clash with Officers

1 day ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Immigration and Corrections, Agus Andrianto, responded to the escape of 19 inmates from Class IIB Nabire penitentiary, Central Papua, on Monday, June 2, 2025. He stated that he had instructed the Director General of Corrections, Mashudi, to fly to Papua.

"Tonight, the Director General of Corrections will go to Nabire to review the situation and take action," Agus confirmed to Tempo on Monday, June 2, 2025.

Agus stated that his ministry had also coordinated with the local District Military Command (Dandim), Resort Police Chief (Kapolres), and Regional Police Chief (Kapolda) to assist in the search for the escaped prisoners.

Agus said further actions will be taken upon Mashudi's arrival on site, and opt for "relocation" if necessary.

The escape of the 19 inmates occurred around 11:00 a.m. local time. One of the prisoners, Ardinus Kogoya, suddenly attacked the officers using a long machete that was allegedly hidden behind his back. The machete is suspected to have come from inside the prison and is commonly used for cutting firewood.

The attack wounded three officers, namely the Head Guard, Rahman; the Head of Security and Order, Yan Nawipa; and a guard, Jhosua Epimes.

After incapacitating the officers, the inmates fled through the back area of the prison towards the Regional Government Housing Complex and towards the hills. Discarded prisoner clothing was found at the escape site.

Three of them were observed in the Oyehe market, Siriwini, and Jalan Marthadinata areas in Nabire.

The chief of Cartenz Peace Operation, Brigadier General Faizal Ramadhani, said that they had deployed a joint team to search for the inmates.

He said authorities will not tolerate acts of violence and escape, especially if they involve armed criminal group (KKB) network.

"Our team, together with the Central Papua Police and relevant institutions, is currently pursuing them intensively. All escaped prisoners will be dealt with firmly according to procedures," Faizal stated in his official release, Monday, June 2, 2025.

The identities of the escaped prisoners are as follows:

- Members of KKB Puncak Jaya: Yotenus Wonda, Alison Wonda, Tandangan Kogoya

- Members of KKB Puncak: Alenus Tabuni, Junius Waker, Yantis Murib, Ardinus Kogoya, Pelinus Kogoya, Marenus Tabuni
