Bali's Sanur SEZ Officially Opens for Medical Tourism

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated the Sanur Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Denpasar, Bali, on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. The 41.26-hectare area is expected to become an attractive medical tourism destination for many foreign tourists to Indonesia.

The Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, is confident that the Sanur SEZ will become a popular destination for tourists seeking medical treatment, which is currently a global trend. "Wellness and health tourism are on the rise because they are currently global trends," said Widiyanti during the inauguration of Sanur SEZ.

She also promoted the economic zone to have internationally standardized facilities supported by doctors from both domestic and foreign origins. Alongside the inauguration of the SEZ, the Bali International Hospital (BIH) was also inaugurated. "In essence, Indonesians no longer need to seek medical treatment abroad in countries such as Malaysia or Singapore, since we have international-scale facilities and doctors from various countries right here," she said.

The new infrastructure in the Sanur SEZ area is expected to boost the target of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia, which is expected to reach between 14.6 million and 16 million people in 2025.

Foreign Exchange Diversion

The Sanur Health SEZ is one of the strategic tourism projects managed by the state-owned enterprise (SOE) holding InJourney. At the same event, the CEO of InJourney, Maya Watono, mentioned that the total area of 41.26 hectares has the potential to divert around Rp75 trillion of foreign exchange per year into Indonesia. It is estimated that around two million Indonesians seek medical treatment abroad annually, resulting in an estimated outflow of around Rp150 trillion each year.

"Additionally, it attracts foreign tourists who want to experience medical tourism here," she said.

Bali International Hospital

The BIH is part of the state-owned hospital holding company Pertamina Bina Medika Indonesia Healthcare Corporation. It began its inaugural operation on April 14, 2025. This 255-bed international hospital covers 67,465 square meters and is located near the Sanur tourist area, which has attractions such as Sanur Beach and Segara Ayu Beach.

Some of the flagship services at the hospital include cardiology, oncology, neurology, gastroenterology, and orthopedics.

"Currently, there are services for cardiology and oncology, health checks, as well as stem cell regenerative therapy from Germany, and aesthetic surgery from Korea," she added.

The area also has five-star hotels and convention centers. The Sanur SEZ project aims to attract investments of around Rp10.2 trillion and is expected to create approximately 43,647 direct and indirect jobs.
