TEMPO.CO, Bondowoso - President Prabowo Subianto officially launched the Ijen Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) in Bondowoso Regency, East Java, on Thursday, June 26, 2025. The plant is the first of its kind in East Java and was built with an investment of Rp3.9 trillion.
"Today is proof of Indonesia's capability to achieve energy self-sufficiency, which is crucial for our future," said the president during a video conference.
The inauguration of the Ijen PLTP coincided with the launch of seven other geothermal power plants and 47 solar power plants across various regions. “We are grateful to have extraordinary energy resources, particularly renewable ones,” he said, adding that effectively managing these vast potentials is the next challenge.
The Ijen PLTP will supply the Java-Bali grid with an initial capacity of 35 megawatts, out of a planned total capacity of 110 megawatts. The plant, built on 117 hectares of land, is expected to provide energy for approximately 85,000 households.
"Today, we are implementing the president's directive to continuously pursue an energy transition," said Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia in Bondowoso.
The Ijen PLTP project covers six production wells, one injection well, and two reserve wells. The project is supported by 83 transmission towers and a 150-kilovolt network. The plant uses binary two-phase technology with a 100% reinjection system, which is considered environmentally friendly with near-zero emissions.
The system operates using steam and geothermal fluid from production wells to heat a working fluid. This fluid then drives a turbine to generate electricity. During the exploration phase, the project employed 288 workers, increasing to 1,020 during development. The plant currently employs 96 workers, including 191 local residents, to support its operations.
The Ijen PLTP began commercial operations in early February 2025. It is a collaboration between PT Medco Power Indonesia and Ormat Technologies through their joint entity, PT Medco Cahaya Geothermal.
