TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Portugal's national team captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, shed tears of joy after securing their second UEFA Nations League title at the Allianz Arena in Munich, in the early hours of Monday, June 9, 2025. He emphasized that winning a trophy with the national team surpasses all achievements at club level.
Ronaldo believes his teammates deserved this trophy. "What a joy. First of all for this generation, which deserved a title of this magnitude, for our families. My children came here, my wife, my brother, my friends," he stated, as quoted by ESPN.
Ronaldo scored his 138th goal for Portugal in the second half of the final against Spain. The match, which ended in a 2-2 draw in normal time, was decided by a penalty shootout. The 40-year-old player was substituted and watched from the sidelines as Portugal converted all five penalties to claim the title.
This victory marked Ronaldo's third win on the international stage, adding to his Euro 2016 medal and the 2019 Nations League title. "Winning for Portugal is always special. I have many titles with clubs, but nothing is better than winning for Portugal. It’s tears. It’s duty done and a lot of joy," Ronaldo remarked.
For Ronaldo, discussing the Portuguese national team is always special. "Being captain of this generation is a source of pride. Winning a title is always the pinnacle in a national team," said the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.
Cristiano Ronaldo's Future
Ronaldo's future in football remains uncertain. He stated that he does not plan to play in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, which is scheduled to begin later this month. Despite this, he has been approached by clubs participating in the 32-team tournament.
The Al Nassr forward mentioned receiving several offers from other teams to play in the US. Al Nassr's Sporting Director, Fernando Hierro, confirmed that the team is negotiating with Ronaldo regarding a contract extension but faces competition from other interested clubs.
However, for now, Ronaldo is focused on celebrating the victory with Portugal. "It's for a trophy, I had to play and I gave it my all. It's for our nation. We are a small people but with a very big ambition. The future is short-term. Now is the time to rest well," he concluded.
