Cyber Agency Offers Support to Police in Investigating Saudia Airlines Bomb Threat

7 hours ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Head of the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN), Nugroho Sulistyo Budi, highlighted the issue of a bomb threat against Saudia Airlines carrying Indonesian hajj pilgrims from Jeddah to Jakarta and Surabaya in mid-June.

Nugroho stated that the bomb threat could be easily traced to its source. "The (bomb threat) didn't come through the IP (Internet Protocol) network, but by call, it turns out it could be easily indicated if we suspect such a threat," Nugroho said during a meeting with the Governor of Yogyakarta Sri Sultan HB X in Yogyakarta, on Monday, June 30, 2025.

Previously, Saudia Airlines flight SVA5688 received a bomb threat via email.

Nugroho explained that, with this type of threat, the terrorists did not use public networks to communicate openly on the Internet. This makes it easier for cyber monitoring systems to detect it.

"Have there been any bomb explosions where prior information was given?" he asked.

However, Nugroho said his agency continues to monitor all threats. "We must remain vigilant. We have zero tolerance for potential threats. Perhaps the police will explain further," he said.

According to Nugroho, BSSN will assist if the police need data and information about the incident. "We will help according to our role, functions, and duties," he said.

Saudia Airlines flight SV-5726, carrying 442 hajj pilgrims from Group 12 Embarkation Jakarta-Bekasi (JKS), received a bomb threat while flying from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Jakarta, on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

North Sumatra Regional Police stated that the bomb threat message received by the Saudi Airlines pilot contained ideological elements and a terror nuance suspected to be transnationally affiliated.

The message mentioned plans for an explosion using pipe bombs and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

As a result of the threat, the plane was diverted for an emergency landing at Kualanamu Airport, Medan, North Sumatra, to undergo security procedures according to aviation safety protocols.

Nugroho mentioned that one of the topics discussed in the meeting with the Governor of Yogyakarta today also addressed the challenges of future cybersecurity development.

"In the future, the system will be more integrated. The government has set out social and economic data. There is also a national data center, where the applications from various institutions will be integrated into one," he said.

Currently, Nugroho mentioned that with silos or clusters in this security service, the threat may not be strongly felt, because when one sector is affected, the others are not impacted.

"But if all systems are integrated, when one is affected, the others will be affected. So if we are not careful, it will become a problem," he said.
