TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As part of import tariff negotiations, the Indonesian government is offering the United States an investment project in the critical mineral sector. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto conveyed that the offer includes cooperation between the U.S. and the Indonesian Investment Management Agency, Danantara, to build the critical mineral ecosystem in Indonesia. "Indonesia also offers critical minerals to the United States through Danantara for investment in the ecosystem," Airlangga said at the Ministry of Trade on Monday, June 30, 2025.
This project covers important minerals for the electric vehicle ecosystem, especially nickel, and will be built in Indonesia. Airlangga considers this offer to be attractive to the U.S. "For America, this is quite appealing, Indonesia's offer is quite appealing," he said.
Airlangga explained that critical minerals such as copper are highly needed by the electronics, military, and aerospace industries. "They all need cable, they all need copper. We already have copper cathode, and it also exists in the United States," he said.
The government has sent a delegation to Washington to stand by if the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) requests further explanations. "We can respond immediately," said Airlangga.
In addition to trade negotiations, Indonesia is also implementing domestic policy reforms. The government revoked Minister of Trade Regulation No. 36 of 2023 in conjunction with No. 8 of 2024, and will replace it with Minister of Trade Regulation No. 16 of 2025 and eight other implementing regulations.
The new regulations will take effect 60 days after being enacted. This policy includes deregulating imports for 10 types of commodities and aims to strengthen Indonesia's competitiveness in global trade. "Indonesia has received a lower review this year. That is why the President requested deregulation, so that we can be competitive," Airlangga said.
