TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Gates Foundation, formerly known as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1994 as one of several foundations created by the Gates family. This foundation serves as a way for the Gates family to support scientific research, global health initiatives, and local charitable efforts.
From its beginning, the foundation has been intended as an act of generosity. This spirit of giving has developed into one of their core programs called Philanthropic Partnerships.
As stated on the Gates Foundation's website, this program aims to inspire and enable informed and thoughtful generosity so that it reaches everyone.
These activities provide support in the form of money, time, and services. The program also backs research, innovation, collaboration, and the sharing of knowledge to improve charitable giving.
Bill Gates has said that the world faces many significant problems today. Unfortunately, these problems often do not receive enough help in the places where it is most needed. This is the main reason why the Gates Foundation continues to run this program.
Collaborative Philanthropic Activities
This program creates opportunities for everyone to contribute to and participate in philanthropic movements. The Gates Foundation believes that this initiative is an effective way for anyone who wants to become a donor to make a positive impact on the world.
One of the areas they strongly encourage within this charitable movement is addressing child malnutrition and achieving equal access to education. According to their partnerships page, their program has seen success, as they have contributed to a roughly 50 percent reduction in child mortality between 1990 and 2017.
This achievement was made possible through innovations in vaccines and increased access to healthcare, clean water, and sanitation. They also report that in 2020, they were able to help nearly 85 percent of babies in the most disadvantaged countries receive routine immunizations.
A 20-Year Goal
Bill Gates, the Head of the Gates Foundation, has announced a new goal for his organization. By December 31, 2045, he intends to provide substantial aid, approximately US$200 billion, to save and improve lives worldwide.
Following this, he plans to close the foundation, and it will no longer provide permanent financial aid. This significant amount of money represents all of his wealth, which he will gradually donate through his private foundation, including an endowment fund and his personal contributions.
The planned closure of his foundation in 20 years coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Gates Foundation. Meanwhile, his company, Microsoft, will be 50 years old. He has also considered his age in 2045 and believes it will be the right time to donate all of his assets.
