TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Google has begun rolling out an AI-powered summary feature within Discover, its primary news feed on the Google Search app for iOS and Android. This new functionality means users will no longer immediately see media titles. Instead, they will be presented with media logos in the top left corner, accompanied by AI-generated news summaries that also cite the original sources.
The application warns that these summaries are generated with AI, “which can make mistakes,” according to Tech Crunch, July 15, 2025.
Currently, this feature isn't available for all news within the Google app. TechCrunch's testing showed AI summaries appearing on both iOS and Android versions of the app in the United States. A Google spokesperson confirmed that this is an official launch, not a trial, with initial availability in the U.S. for iOS and Android devices, focusing on trending lifestyle topics such as sports and entertainment.
Google stated that the feature aims to help users decide which pages they want to visit. In addition to summaries, Google is also testing other ways to display news in Discover, including adding key points below titles or grouping news by similar topics.
For example, news about President Trump's agreement with Ukraine is presented with links to other related articles, while a Washington Post article about ICE is accompanied by bullet points summarizing its content.
This development comes as news publishers increasingly integrate AI into their own platforms, including The Wall Street Journal, Yahoo, Bloomberg, and USA Today. Startups like Particle are also developing similar services, leveraging AI to provide news summaries, offer diverse perspectives, and allow users to ask follow-up questions on discussed topics.
However, many publishers are concerned that these advanced AI features will decrease their website traffic. Features like AI Overviews and AI Mode could eliminate the need for users to open news sites to get information, as summaries are readily available and can even be accessed in a chatbot-like conversational format. This trend is also evident with other AI applications such as ChatGPT and Perplexity.
In response, Google launched Offerwall, a monetization feature allowing publishers to earn revenue through methods like micropayments, surveys, newsletter subscriptions, or ad viewing. Despite this, some publishers view the launch as belated, given that traffic has already seen a sharp decline.
According to The Economist, global search traffic decreased by 15 percent annually as of June, based on data from Similarweb. The same company noted that news searches not resulting in clicks increased from 56 percent in May 2024 to nearly 69 percent in May 2025. Organic traffic also drastically decreased, plummeting from a peak of 2.3 billion visits in mid-2024 to less than 1.7 billion.
Previously, Google Discover remained a consistent source of clicks even as Google Search traffic declined. However, this is expected to change significantly if the AI summary feature is rolled out more broadly.
