TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Although it may appear minor, selecting an airplane seat is not something to take lightly. For frequent flyers, seat position can significantly impact the comfort and quality of the journey.
Many passengers opt for window seats, as they offer scenic views, help combat drowsiness, and can ease feelings of nausea while flying.
Ultimately, the best seat depends on each traveler’s personal needs. However, if you're interested in exploring other seating options for a more pleasant experience, here are several helpful tips to consider when choosing your spot on the plane.
1. Opt for Seats in Front of the Wing for a Quieter Experience
If you're sensitive to noise and seek a calmer flying environment, consider selecting a seat near the front section of the aircraft, particularly in front of the wings. These seats are generally farther away from the engines (typically located at the rear) resulting in a quieter ride. In addition to reduced noise, this part of the plane often feels more stable during flight, making it a popular choice for comfort seekers.
2. Steer Clear of Aisles Near the Toilet
Comfort can be easily disrupted by constant foot traffic, especially in the aisles leading to the lavatories. Seats adjacent to these aisles tend to be busier, with passengers frequently passing through.
To enjoy a more peaceful and private experience, avoid these seats, particularly on wide-body aircraft with multiple seat columns.
3. Left-Side Seats Are More Convenient for Boarding
In most aircraft configurations, the main boarding door is located on the left side. Choosing a seat on this side, especially in larger planes, may allow quicker access to boarding and exiting.
Being situated closer to the main door can be beneficial if you're looking to disembark swiftly or prefer to minimize time spent waiting in line.
4. Rear Seats Offer Extra Space and Privacy
Though often overlooked, the rear section of the plane comes with its own perks. This area is typically less congested, and some travelers find the legroom here more generous. If you're tall or simply want a bit more space to stretch out, rear seats may offer a more relaxed experience.
Additionally, seats located near the emergency exits tend to have extra legroom. These spots are ideal for passengers who value comfort, especially on long-haul flights.
However, travelers seated in emergency rows must be physically capable and mentally prepared to assist during an emergency evacuation, as required by airline safety regulations.
5. Factor in Safety Considerations
While all seats on a commercial aircraft meet rigorous safety standards, certain studies suggest that seats toward the back may offer a slightly higher survival rate in the unlikely event of an accident. According to a study conducted by Popular Mechanics, passengers seated near the tail section of the aircraft had better odds of survival compared to those seated in the front.
6. Window Seats Support Better Sleep
Getting quality sleep on a plane can be challenging due to engine noise, limited space, and neighboring passengers frequently moving about. A window seat can help mitigate these disturbances. Not only can you control the amount of light entering by adjusting the window shade, but the window wall also provides a place to lean against for more comfortable rest.
Furthermore, choosing a window seat eliminates the need to stand up every time your seatmate needs to use the restroom. For the best chance at restful sleep, try to reserve a window seat near the front, where noise and movement are typically minimized.
7. Sit Over the Wings to Reduce Turbulence
Turbulence is a common concern among air travelers, but your seat selection can influence how much you feel it. To experience less shaking, choose a seat positioned directly over the aircraft's wings. This area aligns with the plane's center of gravity and tends to be the most stable during turbulence, helping you feel more at ease throughout the flight.
