'No King' Protests Mark Trump's 79th Birthday with Nationwide Opposition

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Millions of Americans flooded the streets in a large-scale, peaceful protest titled “No King,” opposing President Donald Trump’s leadership. Demonstrations were held in hundreds of cities across the United States.

In Los Angeles, tensions escalated when police deployed tear gas on a group of protesters who had reportedly thrown stones and bricks at officers.

The protests took place on Saturday, June 14, 2025, the same day as Trump’s 79th birthday, when he was scheduled to attend a massive military parade in Washington, D.C., which was the largest of its kind in the U.S. in decades.

Tens of thousands marched through major cities to oppose the show of military force, which many viewed as authoritarian. According to ABC News, the “No Kings” protests were organized amid growing fears of political violence, intensified by a shooting in Minnesota that left two Democratic politicians and their partners injured just hours before the demonstrations.

Although the parade took place in Washington, D.C., protests were staged in all other major cities across the country. In downtown Los Angeles, the Saturday rally marked the peak of a week-long series of mostly peaceful protests. Police used tear gas in the afternoon to disperse crowds that had refused to leave a designated area.

Organizers of the “No Kings” protest, as reported by Arab News, estimated that millions participated across more than 1,500 cities. The demonstrations were a direct response to Trump’s military parade, which critics said was a self-promoting spectacle funded by taxpayers at a time when many Americans were told there was no budget for public needs.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, condemned the parade, arguing it reflected weakness rather than strength. “It's the kind of thing you see Kim Jong Un, you see Putin — you see with dictators around the world that are weak,” Newsom said on Friday.

“How weak do you have to be to commandeer the military to fete you on your birthday in a vulgar display of weakness? That's Donald Trump," he concluded.
