TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia is keeping close watch on its citizens in the Gulf, where many Indonesians live and work, amid fears that the Iran-Israel conflict might spill over to other nations hosting U.S. military bases.
Andy Rachmianto, Director General of Protocol and Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Jakarta already anticipated the possibility of the conflict widening after Iran responded to U.S. strikes on three of its nuclear sites.
“Certainly, due to the ongoing escalation of the conflict, which is still very dynamic, we have predicted that as a response from Iran to the strike on its three nuclear facilities, Iran openly stated that the attack has consequences,” Andy told reporters at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Tuesday evening, 24 June 2025.
Iran has since retaliated against a U.S. military installation in Qatar, raising concerns that attacks could extend to other Gulf states with American bases.
“We are all aware that yesterday there was an attack as a response to one of the U.S. bases in one of the Gulf countries, Qatar. Will this also spread to other countries where U.S. bases are located in several Gulf countries, especially, we are still observing, following closely, and monitoring,” he said.
Because large numbers of Indonesian migrant workers reside in Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar, the government is prioritizing their safety.
“In this matter, it is crucial for us as a country to continue monitoring the presence of our Indonesian citizens, who are quite numerous in the Gulf region and may be affected by the escalation of the conflict,” Andy added.
He stressed that vigilance is essential, given how quickly the situation could endanger thousands of Indonesians if the fighting spreads.
