TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has signed a Presidential Instruction to accelerate development on Enggano Island, located in North Bengkulu Regency.
The move is intended to address longstanding issues faced by the island, particularly its isolation due to the shallow waters of Pulau Baai Port.
In a video message received by Tempo, Prabowo conveyed his hopes that the instruction would speed up development on the island.
"I hope the people of Enggano will remain spirited. We will continue to assist and drive the development of Enggano. I am now signing the presidential instruction to expedite the smooth progress of development in Enggano," said Prabowo in the statement released by his media team in Jakarta, Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
The signing came after a meeting between President Prabowo and the Vice Chairman of the House of Representatives, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad. Also in attendance were Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
Earlier, Dasco had stated that the House would coordinate with the government to resolve the challenges facing Enggano Island, which remains isolated due to the silted channels at Pulau Baai Port.
"The Chairman of the House of Representatives and I have been requested to communicate with the President regarding Enggano Island, and the resolutions will be made through communications," Dasco said during a press briefing following the Plenary Session at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, as quoted by Antara.
Dasco also confirmed that he would represent the House in coordinating with the government, in accordance with the agreement reached with House Speaker Puan Maharani.
He added that, based on preliminary discussions with the government, dredging at Pulau Baai Port is already underway, being carried out by state-owned company PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero), or Pelindo.
The port has experienced channel silting over the past two months, disrupting docking operations. The sediment buildup has also impacted ferry services to and from Enggano Island.
Enggano is one of Indonesia’s outermost islands, located in the Indian Ocean about 156 kilometers, or 90 nautical miles, from Bengkulu City. Access to the island is primarily by sea.
Traveling to Enggano by ferry typically takes at least 12 hours.
