Indonesia's NTT Earthquake Death Toll Reaches 53

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has recorded a death toll of 53 following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). Data as of Sunday, August 16, 2026, indicates that the victims were spread across six regions.

"The distribution of victims is as follows: 25 in Manggarai Regency, 20 in East Manggarai, 4 in Sikka, 1 each in West Manggarai and Nagekeo, and 2 in Ende," said Berton Panjaitan, Acting Head of the BNPB Center for Disaster Data, Information, and Communication, in a written statement on Monday, August 17, 2026.

The government also recorded 137 injuries resulting from the earthquake. Berton stated that the hundreds of injured victims are currently receiving treatment at nearby emergency health facilities. Additionally, the BNPB reported that 5,488 people are staying in centralized evacuation shelters, while 171 people have evacuated independently.

The earthquake in NTT also caused damage to buildings and infrastructure. The BNPB recorded 1,543 houses that sustained heavy damage from the quake that shook NTT on August 15. Meanwhile, 328 houses suffered moderate damage, and another 532 buildings sustained light damage.

"Damage also affected 87 educational facilities, 50 places of worship, 76 government offices, and various other public facilities," Berton said.

In the two days following the initial earthquake, 995 aftershocks were recorded in NTT. Berton noted that 46 of these were felt by the public. He stated that his agency is currently focusing on search and rescue operations for the victims.

The government is striving to meet the needs of displaced residents by dispatching various forms of aid via both air and land routes. The central government, he added, has sent thousands of logistics packages through the National Logistics Post at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport. A total of 4,925 logistics packages arrived in Maumere and Labuan Bajo last Sunday.

"The logistics packages were distributed as follows: 550 packages to West Manggarai Regency, 1,000 to Manggarai Regency, 550 to East Manggarai Regency, 550 to Ngada Regency, 550 to Nagekeo Regency, 1,000 to Sikka Regency, and 725 to Ende Regency," said Berton.
