Indonesia's President Prabowo Receives Call from Donald Trump

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto shared a moment of receiving a phone call from United States President Donald Trump. The moment was posted on the president's personal Instagram account, @prabowo.

"Today I received a phone call from the President of the United States, Donald Trump," Prabowo wrote in his post on Friday, June 13.

In the photo he shared, Prabowo is seen in safari attire, seated at his desk with his left hand holding a cellphone while speaking with Trump. The content of the conversation has not been disclosed.

Tempo contacted State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi for comments, but as of this report, he had not responded.

President Prabowo had earlier said he wanted to meet with President Trump to discuss the escalating trade war between the United States and China. "I've already asked for a meeting, hopefully, it happens," Prabowo said at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Turkey on April 11, 2025, in an official statement posted on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.

Foreign Minister Sugiono confirmed that Prabowo had already submitted a formal request to meet with Trump. The request was made before Trump announced his tariff hike.

"We submitted the request for a meeting with President Trump well before the (planned) import tariff increase. And of course, it relates to bilateral relations between the two countries," Sugiono said Friday in Turkey, speaking via the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel on Friday, April 11.

The Indonesian government is still waiting for a response from President Trump. Sugiono said the proposed meeting is expected to cover a range of issues, including the potential increase in U.S. import tariffs under Trump's policy. "Yes, given the current developments, I think that will be part of the discussion as well. We'll see how it goes," Sugiono said.

On April 2, 2025, President Trump announced that the United States would impose a 10 percent import tariff on products from all countries, effective April 5. In addition, the U.S. introduced reciprocal tariffs targeting countries with trade surpluses against the U.S., while the U.S. runs a trade deficit with them. The reciprocal tariff came into effect on April 9. Indonesia was hit with a 32 percent tariff, while China faced a 34 percent rate.
