TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Tokyo has urged Indonesian citizens in Japan to uphold Indonesia's good name. This call comes amid growing concerns over legal violations and a lack of discipline involving some Indonesian nationals, which could potentially tarnish the nation's image and impact future job opportunities for Indonesians in Japan.
"All Indonesian citizens in Japan must comply with the laws and regulations in force. Japanese law enforcement authorities have full authority to handle legal violations committed by foreign nationals," stated a press release from KBRI Tokyo, received in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
KBRI Tokyo also encouraged Indonesians to maintain harmonious relationships with each other and with the Japanese community. They are also urged to actively participate in introducing Indonesian culture within their residential and work environments.
"In every activity, Indonesian citizens are expected to maintain high standards of norms, ethics, and culture, and adhere to the applicable laws in Japan," the KBRI emphasized.
Growing Indonesian Presence in Japan
According to data from the Japan Immigration Office as of December 2024, the number of Indonesian citizens in Japan reached 199,824 people, an increase of over 15 percent in the last six months.
This figure accounts for approximately 5 percent of the total foreign residents and 0.16 percent of the overall Japanese population.
The KBRI Tokyo website (kemlu.go.id/tokyo/) also notes that the majority of Indonesians in Japan are workers across various sectors, accompanied by around 7,000 students pursuing education at various institutions nationwide.
To ensure a safe and conducive environment for all Indonesian citizens in Japan, KBRI Tokyo, in tandem with the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) Osaka, maintains regular communication and coordination with Japanese authorities.
This relationship extends beyond the central government level to various prefectures and cities, aiming to ensure the protection and comfort of Indonesian citizens living and working in the Land of the Rising Sun.
KBRI Tokyo, along with KJRI Osaka, calls upon all Indonesian citizens in Japan to uphold the nation's good reputation, foster a positive atmosphere in their surroundings, and strengthen unity and solidarity among fellow Indonesians. This invitation is part of a collective effort to maintain Indonesia's positive image in the eyes of the Japanese public and government.
"The bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Japan, which has been established for 67 years, has been very good. This relationship needs to be continuously maintained and strengthened by all parties, both governments and the people of both countries," KBRI Tokyo stated.
