Iran Sets Alternative Shipping Routes in Strait of Hormuz

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Thursday the establishment of an alternative maritime route in the Strait of Hormuz due to the risk of sea mines amid rising tensions with the United States.

Cited Antara, according to a Mehr News Agency report that included a map of the routes, the IRGC Navy warned of a "war situation" in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the possible presence of sea mines in key waterways.

Until further notice, all ships passing through the strategic waterway must follow alternative routes and coordinate with the IRGC Navy to ensure safe navigation and avoid potential sea mines.

"Given the war conditions in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz and the potential presence of naval mines in the main area of the strait, all ships must adhere to alternative navigation routes," the IRGC Navy said in a statement.

Inbound traffic is directed to sail north from the Gulf of Oman. This route passes Larak Island and continues towards the Gulf. Vessels depart from the Gulf for outbound traffic, passing south of Larak Island before heading towards the Gulf of Oman.

The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains unstable amid Iran's complete closure and partial reopening after announcing a temporary ceasefire with the United States.

According to Pakistani government sources, the U.S. and Iranian delegations will hold "direct" talks in Islamabad to negotiate a permanent ceasefire and end the war that began on February 28. The source said that negotiations, which are scheduled to begin on Saturday, are likely to last more than a day.
