Israel Launches Strike on Lebanon During Ceasefire, Killing 12

13 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 12 people, including five Hezbollah fighters, in eastern Lebanon, according to Lebanese government media reports, which Israel claims is a warning to the armed group not to attempt to rebuild its power.

Eight others were injured on Tuesday in Israeli airstrikes that hit the Wadi Fara area in the northern Bekaa Valley, including a camp for Syrian refugees, according to Lebanon's National News Agency, cited by Al Jazeera. The Israeli military stated that in the airstrikes, they targeted a training camp used by Hezbollah's elite fighters and a warehouse the group used to store weapons.

The airstrikes mark the deadliest in the region since the U.S.-mediated ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel last November. Israel has repeatedly violated the ceasefire, with almost daily attacks on various areas in the country.

Bachir Khodr, the governor of the Bekaa region, said seven of the casualties were Syrian nationals.

Israel dealt a heavy blow to Hezbollah in last year's war, killing its leader Hassan Nasrallah along with other commanders and destroying much of its weaponry.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Tuesday's attack sent a "clear message" to Hezbollah. He accused Hezbollah of planning to rebuild the ability to attack Israel through the elite Radwan forces.

There was no response from Hezbollah or the Lebanese government to the recent Israeli attack.

Under the November ceasefire agreement, Hezbollah was required to pull its fighters back to the north of the Litani River, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the Israeli border. Only the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers are allowed in the area.

Israel was required to withdraw its forces from the country entirely, though they could remain in five designated strategic locations.

The U.S. has proposed to the Lebanese government to secure the disarmament of Hezbollah within four months in exchange for Israel ceasing airstrikes and withdrawing its troops from positions it still holds in southern Lebanon.
