Israeli Military Bombards Tehran, Hits Evin Prison and Fordow Nuclear Site

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Monday, June 23, 2025, that the Israeli military had launched a strike on Iran’s capital, Tehran, including a direct hit on Evin Prison.

In a statement cited by Al Jazeera, Iran’s Ministry of Justice said the situation inside the prison remained under control and dismissed reports of unrest as “unfounded.” The ministry also condemned the Israeli assault, describing the targeting of the prison as a breach of international law.

Both countries continue to trade accusations of violating international law. Israel previously accused Iran of similar breaches, particularly over attacks on hospitals.

As reported by Al Arabiya, Evin Prison is known for housing political prisoners and dissenters against the Islamic Republic, as tensions deepen between the long-time rivals.

Beyond Evin Prison, Israeli air raids also hit the internal security headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the offices of the Basij paramilitary forces.

For every shot fired at the Israeli home front, the Iranian dictator will be punished and the attacks will continue with full force,” Katz said, as quoted by Sky News.

Katz also stated that Israeli forces were now striking central Tehran targets with “unprecedented intensity.”

Among the locations targeted on Monday was Iran’s Fordow nuclear facility. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the attack aimed “to block access” to the site.

The strike was confirmed by a spokesperson for the Provincial Crisis Management Headquarters, speaking to the semi-official Tasnim news agency, one day after the United States reportedly hit the same facility with a powerful bunker-busting bomb.

The official assured that the surrounding population was not at risk.

Meanwhile, a powerful explosion echoed through northern Tehran.

The Iranian Red Crescent reported that the Israeli strike had landed near its building in the northern part of the city. The conflict between the two nations has now stretched into its 11th day.

“New attacks around the Red Crescent building...,” the emergency agency said in a Telegram post, sharing a video showing smoke rising from the area.

Iranian media also reported that the Israeli assault disrupted the electricity supply in Tehran, causing blackouts in several neighborhoods.

“The power distribution lines in northern Tehran suffered damage, causing power outages in several areas,” Fars news agency reported.

In retaliation, Iran fired around 15 missiles into Israeli territory on Monday, according to Israeli news reports.

Earlier that day, a loud explosion was heard in Jerusalem following a warning from the Israeli military about incoming missiles from Iran.

Roughly 10 minutes after confirming the first launch, the military reported that “additional missiles have been launched” and urged residents to seek shelter. Sirens reportedly sounded for over 30 minutes.

The Magen David Adom rescue service said there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Later, the Israeli military announced that residents could leave protected areas, signaling that the immediate threat had passed.

According to The Times of Israel, one Iranian missile struck near a “strategic infrastructure facility” in southern Israel, leading to power outages in the surrounding region.
