Jokowi Hails Prabowo's U.S. Tariff Talk Success with Trump

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, has lauded President Prabowo Subianto for the successful outcomes of his negotiations regarding import tariffs with United States President Donald Trump. According to Jokowi, Prabowo has secured a significant accomplishment.

"[Through] a personal approach, a call with President Donald Trump, and extensive discussions, the tariffs were reduced from 32 percent to 19 percent. In my opinion, this is an extraordinary achievement. 19 percent is the lowest in ASEAN," Jokowi said following Prabowo's visit to his private residence in Sumber, Surakarta, on Sunday, July 20, 2025.

Jokowi also highlighted Prabowo's good finalization of the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) negotiations. He acknowledged that the process had been protracted and challenging, yet Prabowo successfully concluded it.

"The negotiations for Indonesia's IEU-CEPA had been ongoing for ten years and were very tough. Through his skill and personal approach, the agreement finally took place. So future trade will truly be at zero percent tariffs," he explained.

On this occasion, Jokowi further expressed his satisfaction with the direction and strategic steps taken by President Prabowo.

"If you look at the numbers, if I just look at the approval rating, it's still very high. This means the public appreciates it, the public gives recognition through the approval rating, which I think is good," Jokowi remarked.

Earlier on Sunday, July 20, 2025, Prabowo visited the residence of the 7th President, Jokowi, at Gang Kutai Utara No. 1, Sumber, Solo, Central Java. The Head of State briefed Jokowi on the results of his official state visits to several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Belgium, and France.

Among the key outcomes Prabowo mentioned was an agreement with the Belarusian government, which expressed interest in purchasing rubber from Indonesia.

Prabowo also affirmed that Indonesia is well-received by countries worldwide, emphasizing the nation's consistent promotion of friendship and cooperation with all parties.

"I keep Indonesia's tradition as a non-aligned, non-bloc country. We are known for not wishing to join any bloc. We participate in BRICS for our economic interests, but we have also registered with the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development)," Prabowo said in an official statement.
