TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian announced that the Chinese government has launched an ASEAN visa, specifically aimed at business travelers from the 10 ASEAN member countries as well as Timor-Leste, an ASEAN observer.
According to Channel News Asia, Lin stated that the ASEAN visa is part of efforts to strengthen China's relations with Southeast Asian countries and promote cross-border personnel exchanges and economic cooperation.
The ASEAN Visa allows holders, including their spouses and children, to make multiple visits to China over a five-year period, with a maximum stay of 180 days for each visit.
According to Lin, the frequent visits between Chinese and Southeast Asian communities demonstrate a shared aspiration to facilitate cross-border mobility in the region.
As reported by Antara, on June 3, 2025, the launch of the ASEAN visa is not isolated. The Chinese government continues to expand its visa exemption policy and simplify entry permits as part of its global economic openness strategy.
China has thus far unilaterally granted visa-free access to 43 countries, including Latin American countries (such as Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates).
Despite targeting specifically business travelers, the ASEAN Visa launch by China adds to the list of Asian countries that grant visa exemption for Indonesian nationals.
Referring to the Visa Index website, below is the list of Asian countries that grant visa exemption for Indonesian passport holders:
- Brunei
- Philippines
- Hong Kong
