TEMPO.CO, Bandung - Mount Dukono in North Halmahera, North Maluku, erupted today, June 24, 2025, at approximately 07:10 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) or 09:10 local time. The volcanic ash column was observed to reach a height of 1.5 kilometers above the summit, or 2,587 meters above sea level.
The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 34 mm and a duration of 64.94 seconds. The observed ash column was white, gray, and black, with thick intensity, leaning towards the east. "The eruption is still ongoing as this report is being made," said Muhammad Wafid, Head of the Geological Agency, in a statement shared on Tuesday morning.
The mountain, which stands at 1,335 meters above sea level, is currently on Alert Status (Level II). Wafid recommends that residents and tourists avoid approaching the Malipang Warirang Crater within a four-kilometer radius.
"Considering that periodic volcanic ash eruptions occur, and the ash distribution follows the direction and speed of the wind, causing the ash deposition area to be unstable, we recommend that people always have masks available for use when needed to avoid the threat of volcanic ash to the respiratory system," he added.
Mount Dukono is now ranked as the fourth most active volcano in Indonesia. Based on data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) of the Geological Agency, Mount Dukono has erupted 337 times in the past six months, including events last Saturday and Monday, which produced volcanic ash columns measuring 1.4 and 1.6 kilometers, respectively.
